Rio Bravo - Rancho del Oro -Break in (plus attempt)

Date: January 25, 2012 Between 6 and 8 pm
Type: Break in
Source: Neighbor on Same Property
Location: Near Rio Nazas and Rio Bravo in Rancho del Oro

Entry:

The deadbolt locks on the casita door facing the street and the gate to the yard were both popped out of their cylinders.
At Home: Neighbor yes, occupants of Casita - no
Deterrents:

On the casita are bars on windows, locked doors and spikes and high walls around both properties.
The Casita and the main house are inside the same high walls. There is barbed wire over one wall that faces the street and very high bouganvillea.
The main house has motion sensor lights and alarms (audible).
The locks on the casita and the garden gate that the gardener and pool guy use were both locked and punched out. Not just jimmied but punched right out.

Other Deterrents: I was home, less than 100 yards from the casita with the terrace doors open and all the lights on
Future Deterrents: I am going to talk to the landlord about installing better locks and more lighting as well as a whole property alarm or electric fences over a vulnerable part of the wall.
Amount Stolen: (Value) Over $10,000. Still assessing loss
Description: The residents of the casita had just left for dinner at 6 PM. They noticed a red mustang car driving by slowly; it stopped just ahead as they left. The driver appeared to be on a cell phone.
When they returned less than two hours later both doors had been forced open. Their casita had been ransacked and laptop, wallet, jewelry was taken.
I live in the main house and was sitting near the terrace doors, could see the casita bedroom and heard nothing, saw nothing. They had to have forced the locks quietly.
My house is above their and the robber(s) came up the steps to my terrace and opened the gate. Something scared them off, either seeing me home or hearing me or seeing the lights or a noise, who knows. I can see the gate area and again was right by the door and heard and saw nothing.
Armed: No Idea
Police Called: Yes. Chapala number called and they were here within two minutes. Very professional. A second unit arrived within 5 minutes with an english speaking officer.
Ministerio Report:  A report will be filed tomorrow morning.
